  2. I. American Opposition to the Treaty • Republican controlled Congress refuses to sign Treaty of Versailles. • Why? • The League of Nations.

  3. Article Ten of the League plan is biggest problem. • Article #10: All member nations must step in case of problem. • The Senate, led by Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, pressures Wilson to compromise on the League.

  4. ` • The U.S.NEVER signs the Treaty of Versailles. • The U.S.NEVER joins the League of Nations!! • In 1920 President Harding signs a separate treaty with Germany.

  5. What would Republican Senator Henry Cabot Lodge say about the League of Nations & Article 10? Isn’t that what caused WWI in the first place? Alliance Systems

  6. Wilson refuses to compromise. BIG Mistake • Wilson goes on speaking tour to convince the public to push for the treaty. • Wilson suffers a stroke while speaking in Colorado. The Treaty is DOOMED in the U.S.

Wilson should have worked more closely with the Senate during peace negotiations b/c • A-all treaties must be approved by a 2/3 vote in the Senate • B-Wilson needed Senate support to run for a third term in 1920 • C-the Senate was controlled by his own political party • D-the Senate was responsible for the war debts of the allies

Many Germans felt that the Treaty of Versailles was unfair because • A-Germany was not involved in the crisis that led to war • B-the bases for peace in the 14 Points were ignored in the Treaty of Versailles • C-The U.S. claimed many of Germany’s former colonies • D-they resented the loss of German land to England
