Why is it important to serve a reimbursable breakfast? • The Oregon Department of Education will only reimburse the district for meals that meet certain criteria. • These meals are called reimbursable meals.
What needs to be offered for a reimbursable breakfast? • Milk – ½ pint or 8 fluid oz. • Note: only white milk is served at breakfast • Fruit – ½ cup of 100% fruit juice or ½ cup fruit/vegetable • 2 servings of Bread/Cereal • serving = 1 slice bread, ¾ cup cereal, ½ bagel, etc. -OR- • 2 servings of Meat/Meat Alternative • serving = 1 oz. serving of egg, meat, cheese, peanut butter, etc. -OR- • 1 serving Bread/Cereal & 1 serving Meat/Meat Alt.
Offer vs. Serve (3 out of 4 rule) • Students must choose 3 out of the 4 items offered at breakfast. • Students may decline food items. • If the child doesn’t want all 3 items they’ve chosen, they can place the unwanted item on the “no thank you/sharing” table. • Adults must allow students to choose their own foods without pressure to select certain foods.
Reimbursable Breakfast examples… • Milk + Juice + Cereal • Milk + Waffle Sticks (2 bread) • Juice + Bagel (2 bread) • Juice + Turkey Sausage Biscuit • Milk + Eggs + Turkey Sausage
This is an example of a reimbursable breakfast… Fruit Milk This breakfast contains 4 food group servings. It is a reimbursable breakfast. Bread/Cereal Note: This item contains 2 servings of bread/cereal
Yes! It meets 3 out of 4 Fruit Milk This breakfast contains 3 food group servings, therefore it is a reimbursable breakfast. Bread/Cereal Note: A bowl of cereal counts as 1 serving of bread/cereal.
Yes! It meets 3 out of 4 Fruit This breakfast contains 3 food group servings. Therefore, it is a reimbursable breakfast. Bread/Cereal Note: This item contains 2 servings of bread/cereal.
No! Milk Bread/Cereal only 1 serving This breakfast only contains 2 food group servings. This is not a reimbursable meal.

New this Year! Breakfast Counts are required! • Acceptable methods for counting breakfast outside the cafeteria: • 1. Tally sheet • 2. Clicker • In your back to school supplies you will receive: • Lanyard and clicker • Clip board Tally Sheet
Counting Breakfast You must count the following: • Students who take a reimbursable breakfast. • Siblings who purchase a breakfast. • Parents who purchase a breakfast. • Staff/Adults who purchase a breakfast.
