  3. Choose Seats • Choose a slip of paper • Find the other people with the same number • Find the table with your number and find a seat • Complete the activity at your table • When finished – send someone up to the ORANGE posters to fill in your table answers on each

Let me introduce myself • My name is Mrs. Jillian Mittica • I used to work at Southside Fundamental Middle School and now I work here. • I also teach Creative Writing so you could have me twice a day. • I live in Palm Harbor (north of here). • I am married and have a dog named Angie who I talk about all the time (I also have a fish and a cat). • I love the beach, reading, travelling, and going to concerts (rock and country music). • I am from Connecticut and I am a big New England sports fan but I also cheer for the Tampa teams! • You can ask me any questions today and always throughout the year. I might not answer, but I usually will 

Scavenger Hunt – work with a partner • What is the teacher’s name? • What materials are needed? • What is the class website? • What can you do if you don’t have your homework on time? • What are the three main classroom rules? • What are two consequences that could happen if you break the Code of Conduct? • What behavior will earn you an IMMEDIATE DETENTION? • How many computers and back-ups should you have for your Technology Plan? • How should you treat a guest in the classroom? • What does a parent signature mean on homework? BONUS: Draw a “demerit”; what do you think it looks like?

Team Building • Confusion Game (hand out) • Fear in a basket • Write down what you are most afraid (at school or in life) of on scrap paper (elaborate if you need to) • Pull one and as class discuss how this person might react in different situations/how you could help them/why they might be afraid • Practice respect and really try to put yourself in someone else’s shoes

Demerits • If you don’t do/finish your homework you get 2 demerits • If you do it but don’t get it signed by a parent you will get 1 demerit • If you forget your materials you will get 1 demerit • You will get a 5 demerit notice to warn you • When you get a 10 demerit notice, you will have to go to IAC to discuss your fundamental school future • DEMERITS ARE NOT DETENTIONS they are only for academic work

  22. Class Mission • The mission of Mrs. Mittica’s class is to create a respectful, safe environment for learning and expression. Students will develop strong reading and writing skills. Students will learn about themselves and the world around them through independent and collaborative work. We will achieve this through goal-setting and tracking our progress throughout the year.

  23. Code of Conduct • Each table will get one of these to brainstorm ideas about – then we will discuss what each means in our classroom community • Respect (Tables 1 & 4) • Responsibility (Tables 2 & 5) • Safety (Tables 3 & 6)

Code of Conduct • Respect – No hurtful words (no insults); listen to ANYONE who is talking to the whole class; be kind to each other • Responsibility – Bring all materials; do your work; help others; be on time • Safety – Keep hands to self; use materials and furniture correctly; listen to all announcements

Rewards and Consequence • If you are caught being good – you might get a ticket into a prize drawing – you can win free time, candy, homework passes, and other cool prizes • Fundamental Demerit rules apply to all assignments • If you break a rule I will give you a warning • If you do it again I will write a report • If you do it again I will write a detention • **Hurtful language including Banned Words comments will get an immediate detention**

Playwriting Baseline • Write a conversation between three people about the new school year. • Character One: former Southside student • Character Two: former Madeira student • Character Three: new to Pinellas Public schools • Name each character • You can work in groups of three if it helps you to talk it out • Be sure to properly format the conversation (don’t ask me. I want to see what YOU know.)

  31. Wanted Ad Assignment • Think about all of the qualities you would want to have in a teacher. • THIS SHEET WILL BE HANDED IN so remove it from binder • Brainstorm a list of at least 10 qualities (you will submit this list for a 5 point class work grade).

  35. Your Assignment: • Create a Wanted Ad that details these qualities in a positive way. • Decorate your ad and make it look like a real Wanted poster (see examples). • You may use any artistic materials that are available in the room.

Friday Bell Work • Set this all out on your desk: • SIGNED course outline (Cut off the Signature) • HOLE PUNCH THE COURSE OUTLINE AND MAKE IT PAGE ONE IN YOUR BINDER LA section – share the hole punch with other tables • SIGNED classroom library policy • Binder opened to LA folder OR 3 prong folder for CW/PW • DEAR Book (read it while waiting for me to start)
