My mother made me a scientist without ever intending to. Every other Jewish mother in Brooklyn would ask her child after school: So? Did you learn anything today? But not my mother. “Izzy,” she would say, “did you ask a good question today?” That difference — asking good questions — made me become a scientist.
Use THIS unit! An exploration in measurement.
Challenge #1 • Working by yourself, list as many different units of linear measure (ie things used to describe how long, how wide, how tall something is) as you can in 30 seconds. Go!
Challenge #2 • Talk to your group and come up with a good question.
The question is… • Why do we have more than one linear unit of measure?
So, • Why DO we have all those different units?? • Couldn’t we get by with just one?
Challenge #3 • Come up with ANOTHER question.
Don’t use THIS unit! • Think about football. • What would this sound like in football was measured in inches?
Don’t use this one either. • Think about an index card: What would we call this if we measured it in yards?
Another challenge: • Work with your groups to come up with5 of your own ridiculous measurement examples. • Use this sentence frame: • What if we measured ______________ in __________. • For example: what if we measured my height in miles? Make your examples into a poster.
DO use THESE units. • As a final example, work with your group to come up with 5 examples of things that are measured. Only one can be linear. What is the unit of measure that is appropriate? • ____________ is measured in ________________.
