The Need for Child Care Wellness Resources • Abundance of wellness resources and policy support for school-aged children • Child care professionals provide care to more than 61% of America’s children • More than 12 million children and adolescents aged 2 - 19 years are obese • Childhood obesity rates have nearly tripled since 1980 • 1 of 7 low-income, preschool-aged children is obese and at increased risk for chronic diseases • Child care providers offer a unique atmosphere to promote health and wellness practices National Food Service Management Institute – Applied Research Division Building the Future Through Child Nutrition

NFSMI, ARD Childcare Wellness Research • Study I Objectives • Describe current wellness practices in childcare centers participating in the CACFP • Identify childcare director’s attitudes, resource and training needs for providing a wellness environment • Define recommendations necessary for establishing a healthy wellness environment in CACFP participating centers • Research Activities • Interviews, focus groups with child care experts, state agency personnel, child care providers, USDA representatives • Developed, piloted, revised a survey to CACFP participating childcare directors (n = 700) in all seven USDA regions National Food Service Management Institute – Applied Research Division Building the Future Through Child Nutrition
