  1. Development of Aerodynamic Forces

  2. Overview • Streamline Patterns Review • Pressure Patterns • Understanding how lift is Generated

  3. Streamline Review

  4. Streamline Definition • A streamline is a path traced out by a mass less particle moving with the air flow. • Velocity is tangent to the streamline at every point. Mass does not cross streamlines. • Streamlines moving closer together indicate increased speed and decreased static pressure and vice versa.

  5. Pressure Patterns • Streamline patterns and pressure distributions on a non-rotating cylinder and symmetric airfoil at zero angle of attack.

  6. Lift Generation • Cylinder with circulation and lift

  7. Lift Generation

  8. Lift on a wing • Lift results from two mass actions on a wing. • PRESSURE • Airflow Deflection = a force (3rd Law of Newton)

  9. Understanding the Coanda Effect
