  11. Extemp Introductions: Practice Techniques When you don’t have 30 minutes to prepare a full speech, you can still prep a “mini speech” where you deliver just the introduction. Choose a practice topic and set a 5-minute timer. During the 5 minutes, construct a full introduction as if you would be giving the entire speech. At the end of the 5 minutes, deliver the introduction within a minute and 30 seconds, with 15 seconds of grace time. Intro Speeches

  12. Extemp Introductions: Practice Techniques This exercise is a game of “connect the dots” that requires you to take a movie, story, or quotation and to connect it to as many potential topics as you can. You can partner with a friend to see who can come up with the most valid connections, judging each other’s list and debating the strength of the connections. This exercise can help with developing attention-getters with strong links to your topics. Connect the Thoughts

  13. Extemp Introductions: Practice Techniques This is exercise is exactly what its name implies: explaining the history of a topic as quickly and efficiently as possible Obviously, this does not mean “spreading” the information as if you’re in a debate round. You should maintain an Extemp-appropriate rate of delivery. The objective is to synthesize and communicate the most relevant historical context about a topic. Take a practice topic, start a 1-minute timer, collect your thoughts until the minute ends, and deliver the background information in no more than 30 seconds. If you don’t already know the relevant historical information, take a moment to research your topic before beginning. Quickstory

  14. Extemp Introductions: Practice Techniques Earlier, we specified three dynamics to impact calculus: scope, magnitude, and immediacy. This exercise is simple - you take a practice topic and identify the facts that would support its significance based on each of the three weighing mechanisms. Essentially, you’re preparing significance statements without the evidence. You can do this exercise in writing or orally. Try to rank each factor based on how compelling it is for a given topic. Impact Facts

  15. Extemp Introductions Be Efficient • Aim for 1:30 to 1:45 as the maximum time of your Introduction. Show Personality • Smile when you begin your speech and don’t be afraid to smile with your humor. • Look like you enjoy the event! Move with Purpose • Avoid gesturing on your first word. Keep you feet planted throughout the Introduction. Extra Tips

  16. Extemp Introductions Timing is everything • Don’t rush your punchlines and give your audience a chance to absorb to key information. Don’t Force It • Humor is good if it’s natural. You’re better off being authentic than trying and failing to mimic what works for somebody else. Practice! • Your introductions won’t improve if you don’t take some time to make them better.
