TOPO-IBERIA: Integrated studiesof topography and 4-D evolution • Topo-Iberia is a 5-year project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science (MEC) under the Consolider-Ingenio 2010 Program of Excellence, with additional support by the CSIC. Total budget: 5.4 M€. Project started a the end of 2006. • Linking superficial and deep processes (lithosphere and mantle level), as well as environmental studies such as global change (interactions between tectonics, erosion-sedimentation and climate), natural resources and hazards. • Integration of different common methodologies and data bases (seismic, potential fields, satellite imaging, dating methods, analogue & numerical modelling,…) and deployment of a multi-instrumental platform: IberArray. • Participants: ICTJA-CSIC Barcelona, Univ. Granada, Univ. Oviedo, Univ. Barcelona, Univ. Complutense Madrid, Univ. Autonoma Barcelona, Univ. Cadiz, Univ. Jaen, IGME (Geological & Mining Institute of Spain), ROA (Royal Navy Observatory) • Involves ~125 Spanish senior researchers.

  5. Instrumentation: Nanometrics Trillium 120 and Taurus Number: 40 (pool) + 30 (CSIC) • Nanometrics Taurus datalogger • Nanometrics Trillium 120-P sensor • 40 Gb HD + 4 Gb Flash Card • 2x18 W solar panels

Software for data acquisition and handling • Acquisition: Nanometrics proprietary software (Apollo) to extract data from station and convert to miniSEED. • Data storage and availability: USGS’s CWB (Common Waveform Buffer). Allows for real-time acquisition (not used) and remote access to waveform data. • Metadata: USGS’s INV (Inventory) software. Allows book-keeping of instrumentation, and generates dataless SEED files for entire network and all epochs. • Data quality: USGS’s PQLX software for noise analysis (McNamara and Buland, 2004). • Phase picking, relocation, … : SEISAN (Havskov and Ottemöller)

TOPO-IBERIA / IberArray: summary in numbers • - 5-year project 2007-2011 (now at end of 2nd year) • - 10 Institutions and 125 researchers • - Currently 120 broadband stations (35 temporary) in the Iberian Peninsula, and 30 (20 temporary) in northern Africa / Morocco • - 1st deployment (south): 2007 – summer 2009 • - 2nd deployment (center): summer 2009 – end of 2010 (estimate) • - 3rd deployment (north): end of 2010 or beginning of 2011 • - Pool of 40 (+30) stations (Trillium 120 + Taurus) for future temporary deployments
