Zator – over eight hundred years of history. 1179-2013. Position. A town situated on the Skawa river in the south part of Poland, about 50 kilometres from Kraków. Zator is the main city of the Carp Valley and the oldest carp breeding centre in Poland. Short history.

  2. Position • A townsituated on the Skawa riverinthesouth part of Poland, about 50 kilometresfrom Kraków. • Zator isthemain city of theCarp Valley and theoldestcarpbreedingcentrein Poland.

Shorthistory 1179 – defensivesettlement was established on thetrial trade between Kraków and Silesia 1228 – the first recordsaboutthevillage 1292 – municipalrights 1445 – 1564 the capital of Duchy Zator. 1513 – the Duchy of Zator was incorporated to thePolishKingdom. Afterthe war withSweden , Zator was economicallyweak.

  4. Duringtheyears 1772 – 1918 Zator was part of Austrianinvasion. Attheend of the XIX centurythe railway line was built. Ithelpedthetown to overcometheeconomicproblems. During the World War II, Zator was incorporated to Nazi Germany, and was freed on January 26, 1945. Afterthe war Zator was turnedintothebiggestcarpbreedingcentrein Poland.

  5. Monuments The Town hall which was builtinthe XIX century. On itssidewallthereis a bas-relief.

  6. The Potocki Castle The Zator castle, actually a palace, originally of defensivepurposes. Thecastleisfrom 1445. Itisclassified as a First Class Monument. In 1836 it was completelyrenovated by the Potocki family. AftertheWorld War II it was turnedintothefisherycentre.

  7. Church One of theoldestarchitecturalsitesin Zator. Consecratedin 1393. Insidethereis a neo - Gothicaltar and picturespainted by Slovakartist, Bohun. Thevisitorscanalsohearthesound of baroque organ.

  8. TheCarp Valley In the 12th and the 13th century, brought by theCistercian Order from Bohemia and Moravia. Thebeginning of carpbreedingin Zator go back to the 14th century.
