  2. The 5 Themes of Geography LOCATION: Geographers study a place by finding its location. There are two types of location:

  3. LOCATION Example: Lansing, the capital of Michigan, is located Northwest of Detroit

  4. The 5 Themes of Geography PLACE: Place refers to the physical and human characteristics of an area– it describes what it is like. This includes: What is the land like (land and water features)? What the climate and vegetation is like? What buildings or man-made structures are there? How many people live there? What is the culture like? What language is spoken there?

  5. PLACE EXAMPLE: The Eiffel Tower is in France. The Rocky Mountains are in the United States.

  6. The 5 Themes of Geography REGION: Areas of the world that have common characteristics. How it is identified: Common climate Physical feature Common language Common national government

  7. REGION EXAMPLE: The Great Lakes Region is an example because the U.S. and Canada both border the lakes and both share in using the water and resources that the lakes provide.

  8. The 5 Themes of Geography MOVEMENT: The way people, goods, and ideas travel or spread from one place to another. • Why did these movements happen? • How do they affect the people living there?

  9. MOVEMENT EXAMPLE: Pineapples are brought to Michigan from Hawaii. Pineapples are a fruit that is not able to be grown naturally in Michigan.

  10. The 5 Themes of Geography HUMAN-ENVIROMENT INTERACTION (H.E.I): See how people have changed and adapted to live in their natural surroundings • How have they used their land and natural resources? • How have they changed or affected the place they live in?
