They also wanted to revive traditional Irish culture and sport e.g. Gaelic literature, music, the Gaelic League which promoted the Gaelic language and the Gaelic Athletic Association which promoted Gaelic football and hurling. Only 15% of Irish people could speak Gaelic in 1909, so doing things like translating English names into Gaelic was a Nationalistic action to show love for all things Irish.
