  2. Plagiarism • Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work as if it were your own, whether you mean to or not (University of Wellington).

  4. How to trace? • Do not depend solely on Turnitin • Check ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, Google • Download the PDF document • Type the suspected sentence in Box “Find” • The copied sentence will be highlighted in yellow.

How to trace? • The copied reference not listed in bibliography • Content of a chapter lacks of continuity with the preceding chapter • Good quality comprehension in Chapter Literature Review but weak in Chapters Methodology, Results and Discussion, and Conclusion • Parameters/Variables/Domains/Dimensions described in Chapter Methodology not similar to Chapter Results and Discussion

Action should be taken by examiner and the Office PG studies at the faculty • Pemeriksa perlu melengkapkan Laporan Plagiarisme SPS-PL2010-2 dan sertakan bukti plagiat • Perkara ini dibincangkan di Mesyuarat Jawatankuasa Akademik/Peperiksaan Fakulti • Dekan fakulti hendaklah mengeluarkan surat pertuduhan kepada pelajar

  9. Appeal • Pelajar dan/atau penyelia boleh membuat rayuan kepada Dekan jika tidak berpuas hati dengan keputusan.

  10. Why a PhD candidate practice plagiarism? • Desperation (1) due to end of study period, (2) due to lack of fund • View that UTM only views Turnitin report • Just to get over with the study for a more promising venture

What advise should a supervisor tell his/her student not to plagiarize? • There is not short-cut in doing PhD research. • Be honest • Academic integrity means that university staff and students, in their teaching and learning, are expected to treat others honestly, fairly and with respect at all times (University of Wellington). • Academic integrity is important because it is the core value on which the University’s learning, teaching and research activities are based (University of Wellington).

  12. What advise should a supervisor tell his/her student not to plagiarize? You can learn how to avoid plagiarism by brushing up on some key skills, such as: • note taking • summarising • paraphrasing • referencing • citing sources.

  13. What advise should a supervisor tell his/her student not to plagiarize? To be a scholar • Recognize the sweetness of knowledge • Continuous updating new knowledge • Respect others who are knowledgeable
