  6. Thank the Russians… • 1957: USSR launched ‘Sputnik’ • An Artificial Earth Satellite • Originally designed to carry nuclear warheads • 1958: U.S. created Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) • Department of Defense (DoD) • Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)

  7. 1969: ARPANET was born… • Was the 1st network • 2 Specific Colleges Hosted the Network: • UCLA • Stanford

(i.e. NASA) • 1971: Only 23 hosts on APRANET • 1972: Ray Tomlinson created the E-mail. • 1973: Global Networking became a reality. • 1977: E-mail became wide-spread (>100) • Over 100 hosts on APRANET • 1979: News Groups was born. • 1st Multiuser Dungeon (MUD)

  10. 1980s • 1982: TCP/IP became standard • Computer was named Time “Man of the Year” • 1983-84: Domain Name System (DNS) • Manage Internet hosts • 1986: Realization of the Internet • 5000 hosts, 241 News Groups • Established 56Kbps • 1987: Commercialized Internet • 28,000 hosts • 1989: 1st commercial e-mail • 100,000 hosts

  11. 1990s • 1990: 300,000 hosts & 1000 News Groups • ARPANET ended, spreads its network to other companies. • ‘Archie’ was established as 1st search engine • 1992: “Surfing the Internet” • 1993: WWW was established • 1995: “dot-com bubble” begins • Netscape Browser • 1996: Enter Microsoft • 1997: 19.5 Million hosts, 1 Million WWW sites, > 71,000 News Groups

  13. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers • Created on September 18, 1998 • Non-profit Organization • Responsible for global coordination with domain names and IP addresses. • Maintain global stability and security • Application Fee: $50,000 non-returnable
