Which statements are correct? • It’s a massive web of computers and connections • It connects personal computers, laptops, mainframes & servers, cell phones, GPS units, music players, machines, cars, & even pet collars. • Internet computer connections exist for the sake of free information-sharing. • It’s a broadcast medium for every person. • The Internet is not owned by one single person.   7. The Internet – One Definition “…an extremely large, well-organized network of smaller computer networks in every country all over the world. These networks and computers are all connected to each other, and share vast amounts of data via a protocol called TCP/IP, a technology that enables computers to communicate with one another quickly and efficiently. All sorts of different entities from every conceivable organization are represented on the Internet: government, educational institutions, private citizens, businesses, etc.” (Internet, About.com)

  8. The Internet & World Wide Web – Equal? • The Internet : “The Internet is at its most basic definition an electronic communications network. It is the structure on which the World Wide Web is based.” (The World Wide Web and The Internet, About.com) • The World Wide Web : An outgrowth of the Internet, created in 1989, by Tim Berners-Lee. It is “a part of the Internet "designed to allow easier navigation through the use of graphical user interfaces and hypertext links between different addresses" (source:Websters). • Conclusion: The Internet & Web are not the same, but they work together. “The Internet provides the underlying structure, and the Web utilizes that structure to offer content, documents, multimedia, etc.” The Web is the user part of the Internet.
