  2. What is language? • Language, the principal means used by human beings to communicate with one another. Language is primarily spoken, although it can be transferred to other media, such as writing.

  3. Number of languages • There are about 6,500 living languages • Of these, 6,000 have registered population figures • 52% of the 6,000 languages are spoken by less than 10,000 people, and 28% are spoken by less than 1,000 people. 83% of them are limited to single countries.

  4. Top 10 languages • 1. Mandarin 885 million speakers • 2. Spanish 332 million speakers • 3. English 322 million speakers • 4. Bengali 189 million speakers • 5. Hindi 182 million speakers • 6.   6. Language families • The languages within a family usually share a common language, from which they developed. However, sometimes languages are considered to be related just because they happen to be geographically close to one another.

  8. Nationality • Nationality, in law, condition or status of belonging to, or having legal identity with, a nation or state.

Ethnic group • An ethnic group derives its identity from its distinctive customs, language, ancestry, place of origin, or style of dress • Members of an ethnic group with a common geographic origin often do share similar physical features. But people of the same ethnic group may also have very different physical appearances, and conversely, people of different ethnic groups may look quite similar
