  2. What is Iron? • An essential mineral used in the body • Transports oxygen from one cell to the next • Can help grow and lubricate the skin and hair • An integral part of many proteins and enzymes in the body

  3. Where does Iron come from? • Plant life • Animal life • Undersea life • Hemoglobin

  4. Nutritious Value • Children (0-10 years) 6-10 mgs per day • 11yrs+ (inc adults) - males 10-12 mgs per day • 11yrs+ (inc adults) - females 15 mgs per day • Pregnancy 30 mgs per day

  5. Causes of Iron Deficiency • Anemia • Loss of blood • Headache

  6. Causes of Iron Toxicity • Death in children (200 mg) • Constipation • Nausea • Vomiting • Diaherrah

  7. Positive Effects on the Body • Reduced risk of breast cancer in women • Provides energy • Aids in the absorption of foods • Brings oxygen to the tissues • Takes out carbon dioxide

  8. How much Iron does the body have By itself, the body contains very little iron. That is why we have to eat different foods with iron and other minerals in them, such as fruits, vegetables, meats, and fish.
