  3. 2.3 Review • 1a. Where was Constantinople located? • Constantinople was located on a peninsula where Europe and Asia meet. • 2a. What was one major difference between the powers of the emperors in the east and the west? • Emperors in the East had both political and religious power. • 2b. How did contact with other cultures help change the Byzantine Empire? • People from other cultures introduced new ideas to the Byzantines. • 3a. What is a mosaic? • A mosaic is an image made from bits of glass or stone. • 3b. What led to the creation of two different Christian societies in Europe? • There were two different Christian societies because people practiced Christianity in the East and West.

  4. Great Schism • The Catholic Church splits into two parts.

  5. Venn Diagram East – emperors led church and government, Greek was main language, priests could marry. Both – practiced Christianity, followed Roman laws, games (chariot races), shared some architectural styles. West – popes and bishops led the church, emperor led the government, Latin was the main language, priests couldn’t marry.
