  2. The solar system is the sun and the objects that orbit around it.

  3. The sun is the center of the solar system. The Sun is important because it provides the Earth heat. It is one of the prime ingredients for most Earth life-forms.

  4. Planets • A planet is a large body of rock or gas that orbits the sun. • The solar system has nine planets. (Pluto is a dwarf)

  5. Choose One planet and find three facts about that planet. Write Your Facts on a Sheet of Paper.

  6. Inner Planets • Mercury • Venus • Earth • Mars • They are the four planets closest to the sun. • Inner Planets have rocky surfaces, and they are warmer than the outer planets.

  7. Earth is different from the other inner planets. It has a watery surface. It is the only planet with a lot of oxygen in its atmosphere. Earth has plant life and animal life.

  8. Outer Planets • 1. Jupiter • 2. Saturn • 3. Uranus • 4. Neptune • 5. Pluto

  9. Outer Planets are made mostly of frozen gases. Their surfaces are colder than the inner planets because they are farther away from the sun. Most outer planets have many moons.

  10. Plutois different from other outer planets. It is the smallest planet in the solar system.

Be a careful reader! • To compare the planets, select a planet from the left and a planet from the right. Then click the compare button in the middle. • Planet Size Comparison

  13. Planet Switch-A-Roo • See how well you can match up the planets. • Start on easy and then increase your level. • In spite of how different they look, the Switch-a-Roo game might make you think the Sun, all the planets, and some of their moons were all the same size. Not true! • Planet Match
