  2. Why? • Parents are necessary part of the equation for success! Student effort + parent involvement = student success Verna Martin, Principal

Why? • Some students are successful regardless of the level of parental involvement, however research has shown that parent involvement in school greatly increases the likelihood of success • For students who have a tendency to struggle in school parent involvement may be the key to unlocking their academic potential Verna Martin, Principal

How? • Parents can monitor their students progress at school in many ways. • Accessing on-line resources available to parents • Contacting your child’s teachers via phone or e-mail • Scheduling a conference with your student’s teachers, counselors, and administrators • Reading through all school mail that comes to the home Verna Martin, Principal

  5. What? • Smart Web • Progress Reports & Report Cards • Drag Sheets • Edusoft • OCCT/EOI • ACT • Odyssey Ware Verna Martin, Principal

What? • Smart Web- this is the on-line grading system used by teachers to document and record your student’s performance in class • Parents and students can access the system through our school or district web-site at www.okcps.org • Teacher are required to enter grades into the system weekly • Contact the counselor or parent liaison for assistance with this process Verna Martin, Principal

Progress Reports • These reports are completed by teachers the fifth week of each quarter to show the student’s grade in the class • These reports are both mailed home and sent home with students (4 per year) • District calendar indicates the weeks these reports will be mailed home Verna Martin, Principal

  8. Report Cards • These reports are completed by teachers at the end of each quarter. At the ninth week it will show how the student is progressing in the class. At the eighteenth week it will show a final grade for the semester in the course. • These reports are sent home with the student and mailed (4 per year) • Reports include absence totals per class and teacher comments concerning your student Verna Martin, Principal

  9. Drag Sheet • This is a form designed to give parents daily feedback on how their student performed in class. • This form is usually helpful to use with middle school students who are having difficulty with completing and/or turning in assignments or behavioral issues • This form requires the parent, student, and teacher to work together to help the student succeed Verna Martin, Principal

  10. Edusoft Benchmark Exams • These exams are given in selected classes quarterly and are used to predict a child’s performance on the OCCT and EOI state exams. Courses Include: • 6th -11th grade English • 6th -11th grade Math (including Alg I, Alg 2, and Geometry) • Biology • US History • Reports are used by teachers to track student progress and develop lesson plans • We are exploring how to make these reports available to parents Verna Martin, Principal

  11. OCCT Parent Report • This is a middle school report that was sent home with 1st quarter report cards. This report indicates whether your student learned the required curriculum for their assigned grade. • Students will receive a rating of Advanced, Satisfactory, Limited Knowledge, and Unsatisfactory based upon their score Verna Martin, Principal

  12. EOI • This is a high school report that was sent home with 1st quarter report cards. This report indicates whether your student mastered the required course curriculum for their assigned courses. Exams are given in Algera I, Algebra II, Geometry, English I, English II, Biology, US History. • Students will receive a rating of Advanced, Satisfactory, Limited Knowledge, and Unsatisfactory based upon their score • Current juniors and below are required to pass 4 of 7 of these exams to graduate with a standard diploma Verna Martin, Principal

  13. ACT • A copy of your students scores are mailed to the school as well as the home. This report is used by most colleges to meet college entrance requirements. • It is recommended that students take the ACT exam at least 4 times during their high school career beginning at grade 10. This will allow the student more opportunities to improve their score on the exam. Even a one point increase in their composite score is significant. Verna Martin, Principal

Steps to Resolving Academic Related Issues • Step 1- Contact with your student’s teacher(s) or the parent liaison for assistance • Step 2- Contact the school counselor or an Assistant Principal • Step 3- Contact the school Principal • It is recommended that these steps are followed in order to resolve the issue as quickly as possible Verna Martin, Principal

  15. Credit Recovery • Odessey Ware- this is an on-line credit recovery program designed to allow student to recover at their own pace. Verna Martin, Principal
