  1. Teacher : Joanne Fernlund 790 7045 joanne@kth.se Welcome!! English is the language of the course

  2. Goal structural geology, rock properties apply to engineering projects other goal – communication skills

  3. Exercises in class: exercises will be graded; final written exam (about 1 hr long) content of the exercises.

  4. Field studies: three-day field trip to Dalarna, cost 350 - ?00 kr. 20 points.

  5. ”Case study”: • A written summary and oral presentation • focus on the geological aspects in association with engineering projects • INTERESTING and SOMETHING NEW

  6. ”Case study”: both in English The oral presentations longer than 10 minuets the written summary is not to be longer than one A4 page

  7. ”Case study”: graded on content, relevance, and quality

  8. The final grade TEN1 = written final test & home test ÖVN1 = labs and exercises and test of the lab exercises Final Grade= [2(TEN1) + 3(ÖVN1)]/5 60% REQUIRED FOR PASSING FOR BOTH PARTS

  9. COURSE LITERATURE · Goodman, R, 1993, Engineering geology, 412 s. Cost 750 SKr • Excursion guide, Dalarna • General Geology book

  10. Questions?

  11. Introduction Geology – is it necessary in Engineering?

  12. Rock Properties – what are they? • physical properties? • mechanical properties? • hydrological properties?

  13. response of materials to applied loads rock strength compressive strength, tensile strength, shear strength abrasiveness, or resistance to wear impact sensitivity Mechanical properties

  14. aquiclude a geological substance that does not allow the movement of liquid or gas - impermeable aquifer a geological substance that allows the movement of liquid of gas easily – highly permeable two end members of a continuous scale impermeable / impervious low permeability moderate permeability good permeability Hydrological properties

  15. Permeability in a porous rock

  16. Permeability in a fractured rock

  17. Focus in this course • surface excavations tunnel construction • dams and reservoirs • slope stability • construction materials • rock quarry • foundations for heavy constructions • landfill • water supply research these
