  1. MEASUREMENT

  2. TYPES • QUALITATIVE • RESULTS ARE DESCRIPTIVE (NONNUMERIC: BIG, SMALL, PINCH, ETC.)

  3. QUANTITATIVE • RESULTS ARE NUMERIC WITH UNITS (1 INCH, 5 POUNDS, ETC)

  4. SI(FUNDAMENTAL)UNITS • 1)LENGTH = METER (m) • 2) MASS = KILOGRAM (kg) • 3) TIME = SECOND (s) • 4) TEMPERATURE = KELVIN (K)

  5. 5) AMOUNT OF SUBSTANCE = MOLE (mol) • 6) PRESSURE = PASCAL (pa) • 7) ENERGY = JOULE (J)

  6. DERIVED UNITS • DEFINED IN TERMS OF 2 OR MORE SI UNITS • REQUIRES MATH (CALCULATED VALUE) • EXAMPLES:

  7. 1) VOLUME • VOLUME = L x W x H = LENGTH UNIT3 • UNITS: cm3 (mL), dm3 (L), etc.

  8. 2) SPEED • SPEED = DISTANCE/TIME • UNITS: m/s, km/s, km/hr, etc.

  9. 3) DENSITY • DENSITY = MASS/VOLUME • UNITS: kg/cm3, g/cm3, g/mL

  10. PHYSICAL PROPERTY USED FOR IDENTIFICATION • DOES NOT DEPEND ON HOW MUCH MATERIAL YOU USE • EX:DENSITY OF 1.00 kg OF SILVER = DENSITY OF 1.00 g OF SILVER

  11. PRACTICE PROBLEMS COPY & SHOW ALL WORK. DON’T FORGET UNITS. 1) WHAT IS THE DENSITY OF AN OBJECT WITH A MASS OF 73.7 gAND A VOLUME OF 5.34 cm3? 2) WHAT IS THE VOLUME OF A CUBE THAT IS 7.3 m ON A SIDE?

  12. 3) WHAT SPEED IS AN OBJECT TRAVELING AT TO GO 4.0m IN 0.045s?
