  1. META-SYSTEM Analysis of Technology Implementation at a Research Hospital Brandi N. Rodriguez UNT CECS 6400.030 TASK 3

  2. ABSTRACT • Baylor Health Care System is just one of several large area hospital systems that have undergone the implementation of new technology and is viewed as a meta-system. The Human Activity System (HAS) includes professors, students, employees, administrators, and various other bodies. Each HAS member is involved in the management and overall use of new health care technology. This paper explores the functions of the system by analyzing the implementation of health care technology using Banthy’s (1992) motion picture lens. Establishing the importance of health care technology and the efficiency and effectiveness of the entire system will also be explored. Lastly, there will be suggestions for improvement within this meta-system in hopes that researchers better understand the details that surround the operations of Baylor Health Care System during implementation of health care technology.

  6. The Narrative The (medical) microsystem is the synthesis of individual, students, family and health care team that impacts health status, daily function capacity and nurturing, caring relationships. The meso-system exists within the larger organization to support the microsystem and enable the multidisciplinary nature of the microsystem's work on behalf of patients, forging a link with the larger macro-system. The meta-system is a systemunderlying and external to other (overlying, lower in logical order, and often more visible) systems, and the understanding of which is essential to the understanding of the overlying systems. For example, the constitution of a nation is a metasystem that governs the code of law that governs the behavior of its citizens.

  7. The Connections • Deming (1993) defines systems as a network of interdependent compartments that work together to accomplish a specific aim. • The macrosystem’s outcomes are no better than the outcomes of each microsystem because they are interdependent. The microsystem is the frontline that produces quality, safety, and cost outcomes.

  8. Results & Recommendations RECOMMENDATIONS • Allow time for adjustments in the workflow prior to implementing new and/or different production / transformation methods. • Guidance is a critical component to the successful implementation of technology. Ensure the exploration of multiple ideas and methods especially during any ‘troubleshooting’ phases. RESULTS • Success is difficult to measure since implementation of technology can be measured by, both, qualitative and quantitative means. • There are not a lot of studies comparing qualitative and quantitative measures of implementation of technology within a meta-system • Application of a different perspective (Banathy) allows for a more diverse perspective to the issues that surround implementation of technology
