  1. Becoming a Board Certified Autism Technician In today's society, Board Certified Autism Technicians (also known as Autism Technicians or Autism Professionals) are very in demand. These professionals are trained to assist people with disabilities by providing services that include interaction with others, preparation and assistance with basic personal care and other services. Many companies need these professionals because of their understanding of autism and the particular needs of individuals with this developmental disorder. The demand for a Board Certified Autism Technician continues to grow at a steady pace. Almost every country in the world is working towards becoming more progressive and one way to achieve this goal is to train and certify workers who can help others with disabilities. A person who has a Board Certification and a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) designation is a Registered Professional Coder (RPC). When a person has both of these credentials, they are considered a Board Certified Autism Technician or Board Certified Autism Treatment Specialist (BTAC). There are many people who are working in the field of autism-specific training, education, research, and policy development. Because of the growing need for these workers, the US Department of Education (DoE) has created several autism certifications. The three most popular certifications are: Certified Autism Treatment Specialist (CAT), Certified Social Service Provider (CPS) and Certified Homeopathic Practitioner (CHMP). Each of these categories requires a different level of training and education. The majority of training programs require at least some amount of classroom training. The benefit of participating in a classroom training program is that the individual will learn from a qualified professional who has experience in working with individuals with autism and similar disorders. It is also beneficial to have a teacher who can explain various theories and strategies related to autism and related behaviors, such as reinforcement, socialization, and intervention. Another benefit of a classroom program is that the individual will learn directly from a licensed professional who is certified in one or more areas of autism. Often, these professionals also have additional expertise in treating autistic spectrum disorders. Training classes are often combined with a background check or evaluation by a practicing and licensed mental health provider. Some states require that people working in autism-specific employment receive a background check. This is because many times a job may look very good on paper, but the worker may have some behavioral issues that are not visible to the employer or the public. When an individual goes through a Board Certified Autism Technician or Board Certified Autism Treatment Specialist certification program, they will be checked for any issues that would prevent them from being eligible to work. The Board Certified Autism Treatment Specialist (BATS) certification is generally obtained after a one- hour online training session. After passing an interview process, you will be given a written evaluation based on the information that was provided during the interview. If there are any gaps in the information or if you do not understand everything that has been discussed during the interview process, you may need to get your information in writing before you can apply for certification. You will

  2. then be required to obtain a CPT or written examination from the Board Certified Autism Treatment Specialist (CBT) to prove that you meet the minimum educational and clinical requirements for a CPT. You will then take a test to measure your general understanding of the material. Once you have completed the training and passed the written examination, you will be required to take a battery of tests to determine if you meet the standards for eligibility for CPT certification. You will also be required to demonstrate your skills on the autism treatment and cognitive skills areas of the testing. If your testing results indicate that you do meet the minimum standards of a CPT, you will be given a certificate and be able to work as a consumer safety technician in Texas. Once you have become certified, you will be required to take an additional test to prove that you have the continuing professional development needed to maintain your certification. Professionalism is an important part of working as a Board Certified Autism Technician. You will be expected to treat clients with respect and adhere to all policies and procedures of the treatment plans that you are overseeing. Professionalism also means that you will need to conduct a thorough background check to ensure that you know the people that you will be working with and that they are qualified for the job. Clients and behavior analysts alike take these background checks very seriously, as knowing the right person to bring into the treatment facility will help to ensure that the work is completed in a timely and safe manner.
