What is a Pharmacy Technician? • A pharmacy technician is defined as individuals working in a pharmacy, who under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, assist in activities not requiring the professional judgment of a pharmacist.  • Pharmacy Technicians may help the Pharmacist by counting drugs, entering prescriptions, answering telephones and interacting with customers.

  3. Why Become Certified? • Certified Pharmacy Technicians (CPhT) are typically given more responsibility, are given promotions and earn higher salaries. • In today’s job market, being certified makes your job application stand out from the rest.

  4. Pharmacy Technician Certification • The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board is a national certification and lasts for 2 years. • To become certified, you must pass the Certification Exam with a score of 650 from a scale of 3-900.

  5. Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) • To take the test, you have to apply through PTCB’s Website (www.ptcb.org) • Once approved, you have 90 days to take the test. • The test is taken at PearsonVue test centers. You sign up for an appointment online. • There is a test center located on Charles Blvd. in Greenville.

  6. The Exam • The exam is taken electronically at PearsonVue. • The exam consists of 90 questions and you are given 2 hours to complete it. • Immediately after finishing the test, a Pass or Fail is shown on the screen.

  7. The Exam • The exam tests 3 basic knowledge functions: • Assisting the Pharmacist in Serving Patients • Maintaining Medication and Inventory Control Systems • Participating in the Administration and Management of Pharmacy Practice

  8. The Exam • Need to know Brand/generic names, drug regulation and control, terminology, drug routes, prescriptions, compounding, inventory management, financial issues and pharmacy calculations.
