Target of this project To define a sample of spectroscopically identified serendipitous XMM sources at |b| > 20o fX > ~ 10-13 erg cm-2 s-1 Primary Selection Camera: the MOS2 detector • Bright sample (BS):CR (0.5-4.5 keV) > 0.01 s-1 (~7x10-14 cgs) • “Hard” Bright sample (HBS):CR (4.5-7.5 keV) > 0.002 s-1 (~7x10-14)

  3. The XMM SSC Bright Source sample • Images used: 237 • Sources in the bright sample: 389 • Sources in the “hard” bright sample: 67 • (56 sources are in common)

  4. Main BSS observing runs since the beginning of this project (2001)

  5. Telescopes used so far.. • TNG: 28 nights 124 Id • ESO (3.6m/NTT): 11 nights 87 Id • Calar Alto (2.2m): 3 nights 14Id • Others (MKO,AAT): 19Id TOTAL: 42 nights 244Id 244 Sources Identified (our own spectroscopy)

  6. So far… (November 2006) Spectroscopic Identifications • bright sample:337 sources 87% • “hard” bright sample:65sources 97% Total : 400 X-ray sources, 348 spectr. identified ~ 87%

  7. Optical identification & classification BS HBS Sources 389 67 Identified 337 (87%) 65 (97%) • BS HBS

  8. Status of New Proposals/Projects • ON GOING • Spitzer Cycle-3 (PI: P. Severgnini) • 17 Type 2 AGN extracted from the HBS Sample • 7 objects already observed. • PLANNED IN THE NEAR FUTURE • Detailed ESO/VLT Observations on • interesting subclasses of sources: • e.g. Optically diluted AGN or high X-ray to optical • flux ratios sources or Type 2 QSOs
