  1. Catholic & Apostolic Chapter 5 – 5 The Church Mr. Christopher B. Perrotti

  2. Prayer • Let us continue to pray for the victims of the events of Boston and Texas, while keeping in mind our own personal relationship with our Church. Remember that all things are possible through God, Our Father and Creator. • Prayer Psalm 121 • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcHvkxFJy8E.com

  3. Catholic • The third great historic mark of the one true Church was that this Church was Catholic • Catholic means "universal” • We celebrate the Birthday of the Church on Pentecost Sunday – The Holy Spirit came down on a great Jewish and Pagan Holiday so that the Apostles could spread the Word to the four corners of the earth!

  4. Catholic • The Catholicity of the Church: • The Church is for everybody at all times • The Church was destined to spread everywhere throughout the whole world Saint Paul wrote: "the word of truth . . . in the whole world . . . is bearing fruit and growing" (Col. 1:5-6)

  5. The Church is Catholic • The Church is said to be Catholic in two ways: • The Church is Catholic because she is whole and complete. • Christ has united Himself to her entirely and has given her the fullness of his holiness -Second, the Church is Catholic because she has received universal authority from Christ to fulfill her universal mission.

  6. St. Cyril of Jerusalem • Bishop of Jerusalem and Doctor of the Church, born about 315; died probably 18 March, 386. • In one of his most famous lectures, He describes the Catholicity of the Church. • A Church that extends over the whole world • A Church for everyone who believes in Jesus Christ • Fought against to Hersey's who denied the Divinity of Christ and the Holy Spirit.

  7. St. Cyril of Jerusalem • St. Cyril was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIII in 1883 • Raised in Jerusalem, well-educated, especially in the Scriptures, he was ordained a priest by the bishop of Jerusalem and given the task of catechizing during Lent those preparing for Baptism and during the Easter season the newly baptized. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qMjxigJu6Q.com

  8. St. Cyril of JerusalemCatechetical Lectures 18:23 • It is called Catholic then because it extends over all the world, from one end of the earth to the other; and because it teaches universally and completely one and all the doctrines which ought to come to men's knowledge, concerning things both visible and invisible, heavenly and earthly ;

  9. St. Cyril of JerusalemCatechetical Lectures 18:23 • and because it universally treats and heals the whole class of sins, which are committed by soul or body, and possesses in itself every form of virtue which is named, both in deeds and words, and in every kind of spiritual gifts.

  10. The Rites of the Church • Because the Church is Universal and widespread many different expressions or modes of worship were developed. These are the different Rites of the Church. • Although each rite shares the same apostolic origin and The Sacraments, the differ in external forms: • Linguistic • Artistic • Architectural • Spiritual • Cultural Heritage

  11. The Rites of the Catholic Church • Roman or Latin Rite • Alexandrian –sometimes referred to the Coptic rite, originated in Egypt and includes Ethiopia. • Antiochene- named for Antioch in ancient Syria, it was developed under the influence of the Church of Jerusalem. • Armenian – This rite traces its roots back to the early Church Fathers and uses classic Armenian as its Liturgical Language.

  12. The Rites of the Catholic Church • Byzantine – Originating in the ancient imperial see of Constantinople, it is the most widely used Eastern Liturgical Form • The Chaldean – this rite is concentrated in the Middle East and India. • Each Rite share the same Apostolic Origin and Sacraments.

  13. Year of Faith: Oct. 11, 2012-Nov. 24, 2013 • In the Acts of the Apostles, we learn that God has opened the door of faith for the early Church. • But did you know that God has opened the door of faith for each one us and he invites us to step through the threshold into a deeper relationship with him. • The upcoming Year of Faith is an opportunity for every Catholic to turn towards Jesus Christ, encounter him in the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist and rediscover the Faith and Church

  14. Year of Faith • With his Apostolic Letter of October 11, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI declared that a "Year of Faith" will begin on October 11, 2012 and conclude on November 24, 2013. • October 11, 2012, the first day of the Year of Faith, is the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. . . (Vatican II) • and also the twentieth anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. During the Year of Faith, Catholics are asked to study and reflect on the documents of Vatican II and the catechism so that they may deepen their knowledge of the faith

  15. The Year of Faith for Catholics • The Year of Faith is a “summons to an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the One Savior of the world” . • In other words, the Year of Faith is an opportunity for Catholics to experience a conversion – to turn back to Jesus and enter into a deeper relationship with him. • The “door of faith” is opened at one’s baptism, but during this year Catholics are called to open it again, walk through it and rediscover and renew their relationship with God • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3CF7vW8ZcM.com

  16. The Church is Apostolic • Come right from the Apostles and has Apostolic Succession. • The mark relates primarily from Christ's selection of the 12 Apostles as the foundation of the early Church • The 12 Apostles represented the new 12 tribes of Israel. • They assisted Christ, the new son of David!

  17. Apostolic • The Church is called Apostolic because she is founded on the Apostles in a threefold sense: • Apostolic Foundation: She remains and was built on the foundation of the Apostles • Apostolic Faith: She guards and transmits, with the help of the Holy Spirit who dwells in her, the teachings of the Apostles • Apostolic Succession: She continues being taught, sanctified and directed by the Apostles in the persons of their successors,

  18. The Four Marks of the Church • One • Holy • Catholic • Apostolic • In this Chapter we have given deeper meaning to these simple descriptive words that Christ and the Apostles used to describe our Church!
