What does each of the words below mean?

ONE

HOLY

CATHOLIC

APOSTOLIC

The Four Marks of the Church

to describe the four Marks of the Church. (L3)

to explain aspects of Church that have always will remain the same. (L4)

to evaluate if the Church is Holy there can be no sinners. (L6-7)

Write out the 4 marks of the Church. Leave 2 lines between each. Then choose and write out the definition that best fits. It might be both!

ONE

  • All believers in the Church are united in what they believe and follow.
  • The Churchis unique, because it was set up by God.

HOLY

  • The Church shares in God’s life, and God is Holy
  • The Church doesn’t have any sinners or sins in it

CATHOLIC

  • The Church exists for all people, of whatever time and place.
  • The Church is a type of Christianity

APOSTOLIC

  • The Church gets its mission and authority from the Apostles
  • The Church has to live and work exactly like the Apostles did.

**Choose one of the marks. Explain in more detail what it is saying about what the Church is like.

  • Write down one of the Marks of the Church.
  • On the other side, write one definition of what it means.
  • Find someone with a DIFFERENT word. Ask them to tell you the definition of YOUR word. Then YOU tell them the definition of THEIR word.
  • If both of you are correct. Swap ! If not, find another partner.

The Church will always be ONE, because it will always believe in one Lord, Jesus, and carry out His one mission. We are all one, because we all share in Jesus’ body at communion, as if we were sharing from just one loaf.

  • The Church will always be HOLY, because it is built on the fact that Jesus is the Son of God. It is holy also because God’s spirit is always working in it, to purify it from sin.

The Church will always be APOSTOLIC, because the mission to go out and baptise and preach will never end. Also, because every new Bishop is the direct successor of the Apostles.

The Church will always be CATHOLIC because Jesus died for all people. So the Church must be there to serve all people, no matter what race, culture or time in history.
