ELIME-21 Partnership between • School of Information and Library Science and the Carolina Center for the Study of the Middle East and Muslim Civilization at UNC-Chapel Hill • Al Akhawayn University in Morocco • American University in Cairo • The partnership is supported by a three year grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)

ELIME -21 objectives To help plan and lay the foundation for the establishment of graduate level LIS programs in Morocco and Egypt • designed to meet the local needs of each partner institution • instruction in English • courses taught by UNC faculty, faculty from the partner institutions and a cohort of ELIME-21 Ph.D. students .

Partnership will provide benefits to all involved This project addresses the urgent need for preparing future U.S. library educators with a greater familiarity with the Middle East and, at the same time, assists in the developing of programs for the training of librarians in a region of the world of critical importance.

ELIME-21 Tentative Schedule July 2010-June 2011 Work with partners to plan program Recruit first 3 PhD students July 2010-June 2012 First cohort of PhD students enroll Recruit second cohort First classes to partner institutions July 2012-June 2014 Full cohort of six students will work with faculty to develop and deliver courses and to plan for the development of full fledged LIS programs at AUI and AUC • Of Special Interest to this group: • June 2011—Summer workshop at AUI on the topic of digital curation and libraries
