  2. Questions to think about • When do you read with your students? • How often do they read? • What do you have them read? • What strategies, if any, do you use to engage your students when reading?

  3. Reading with a question in mind • Having students come up with a question, or having them think what the text will be about, gives them a focus while they are reading and improves comprehension. • There are many different ways to do this: • Anticipation Guide • Having them read the title of the article and discuss with partners/small groups/whole group • Teacher gives students the topic and a little background information and have them generate questions • Give students a few key phrases and have them make sentences from those phrases

  4. Socialization • Study on student engagement based on instructional strategies show that Teacher Lecture is the most boring strategy according to students • Majority of students cited that Discussion and Debate is the most engaging instructional strategy • Engagement means “not just getting kids hooked on topics, but also to get them thinking and building knowledge through discussion and debate.”

Example What’s the story about? • American rite of passage • family car as the end-all of social life • 30.7 % of 16-year-olds • kids are used to being driven • A generation consumed by Facebook and text-messaging • Driving is real important to kids • Created new requirements for learner’s permits • Drivers’ education has been cut back in some public schools • Learning to drive is a fundamental part of adolescence • Gives teens a major responsibility
