  3. Making Ice Cream TBQ Response Example • Kimberly Hornback uses the text structure cause and effect to organize her ideas in, “Making Ice Cream.” To begin with, each paragraph describes a different step in the process. For instance, Hornback begins describing the first step by stating, “Blending the basic ingridients is the first step in making ice cream.” Hornback then digs deeper and describe the process in more details by sorting the process into examples of cause and effect. The author specifically describes how the ingredients are blending by writing, “the amount of milk affects the texture and smoothness of the ice cream.” The amount of milk added is the cause in this example, and the effect is the texture and smoothness of the ice cream. Hornback neatly presents her ideas by using the cause and effect text structure to describe specific details of how to make ice cream.

  6. Student Example- Text Based Response • Virginia Hamilton uses the text structure cause and effect to organize her ideas in “Carrying the Running- Aways.” For instance, “And they would have to say that word before I took them across.” This relates to the text structure because the cause is they have to say “Menare,” and the effect is that he would take them across. For example, “A man grabbed the girls arm and mine. If he hadn’t, I would have sunk with the boat.”This relates to the text structure because the cause is that the man saved them and the effect is that they didin’t sink with the boat. “Carrying the Running- Aways” is a great example of text structure.
