  1. Beverage Can Crusher Project Overview

  2. Outline

  3. Group 2 • Kyle Cleland • Loren Lobbestael • Tom Pauly • John Tasdemiroglu

  4. Objective Develop and Construct the Technical Feasibility of a Low Cost, Compact, and Reliable Beverage Can Crusher, which will crush a 12 oz. Aluminum can to 33% of its original size.

  5. Organizational Structure Dr. Newaz Professor Gautam Sayal T.A. Eugene Machine Technician Co-Workers TACOM & GM

  6. Project Approach • Demonstrate the ability to crush an aluminum beverage can • Accomplish our goal within our budget • Improve upon the ideas of several patented designs

  7. Background • Sept. 3rd – 7th – Performed Patent search for can crushers • Sept. 17th – Design review with TACOM co-workers • Sept. 20th – Design review with GM co-workers • Sept. 20th – Met with Eugene to evaluate possible designs • Sept. 27th – Tested the force required to crush beverage cans • Oct. 2nd – Reviewed the feasibility to manufacture our design with Eugene

  8. Potential Solutions • Power Screw Crusher • Dual Plate Crusher • Twin Screw Crusher

  9. Power Screw Crusher

  10. Dual Plate Crusher

  11. Twin Screw Crusher

  12. Selected Design Specifications • Purpose • Crush a 12 oz. Aluminum beverage can to 33% of its size • Materials • Provide strength and durability through the life of the device • Ergonomics • Minimize the forces acting on the body • Function • Provide easy disposal and storage of crushed cans • Safety • Prevent accidental injuries • Aesthetics • Appealing to the consumer • Social Impact • Promote recycling and conserve natural resources • Application • Utilized in homes and at bars/restaurants

  13. Selected Design

  14. Key Constraints • Cost • Can we design & manufacture within our budget? • Reliability • Does it work consistently without failure? • Aesthetics • Does this product appeal to the consumer?

  15. Management Plan • Semi-Weekly Team Meetings • Weekly Progress Reports • Weekly Project Status with Professor • Internal Sub-System Reviews by Technical Peers • Electronic Information Dissemination

  16. Schedule

  17. Budget

  18. Summary • Develop a can crusher that will crush a 12 oz. Aluminum beverage can to 33% of its original size • Illustrated our organizational structure & plan with a working schedule • Stated our research using patents, technicians, and engineers • Showed 3 effective alternate designs • Listed the specifications and working model of the selected design • Cost, Reliability & Aesthetics will be the key constraints • Cost of $310 is below the $400 Budget
