  4. Element Symbols • Use 1, 2 or 3 letter abbreviations • Capitalize the first letter only Examples: C carbon Co cobalt N nitrogen Ca calcium F fluorine Br bromine O oxygen Mg magnesium

  6. Periodic Table The periodic table is an arrangement of the elements according to similarities in their chemical and physical properties.

  7. Families of Elements • Vertical columns on the periodic table • Similar physical properties • Similar chemical properties • Same number of electrons in the outer shell

  8. Periods • Horizontal rows from Group 1 to Group 7 • Arranged by atomic number • Each row has the same number of shells

  9. Valence Electrons • electrons in outermost energy level • Determine how atom will react chemically • Octet rule-atoms want 8 valance electrons
