  3. Sediment • Sediment is formed from weather and erosion. • Sediment-small, solid pieces of material that come from rocks or organisms. Khaki Strebel 2009

  4. Deposition • Deposition occurs after the sediment is formed. • Deposition-process in which sediment is laid down in new location. Khaki Strebel 2009

  5. Cementation and Compaction • Next cementation and compaction happens. (lithification) • Cementation-the process by which dissolved minerals crystallize and glue particles of sediment together. • Compaction-the process by which sediments are pressed together under their own weight.   6. Sedimentary Rocks • Sedimentary rock- a type of rock that forms when particles from other rocks or the remains of planets and animals are pressed and cemented together. • Examples: • Sandstone • Shale • Conglomerate Khaki Strebel 2009

  7. Heat and pressure • When heat and pressure are applied to sedimentary rocks they form metamorphic rocks Khaki Strebel 2009

  8. Metamorphic Rock • Metamorphic rock- a type of rock that forms form an existing rock that is changed by heat, pressure, or chemical reaction. • Examples • Quartzite • Gneiss • Slate Khaki Strebel 2009

  9. Magma and Lava • This causes the rocks to melt. Khaki Strebel 2009

  10. Cooling • Cooling comes after the melting. • The rate of cooling is effected by the location of the magma/lava. • This also effects what kind of igneous rock is formed. Khaki Strebel 2009

  11. Igneous Rock • Igneous rock-a type of rock that forms from the cooling of molten rock at or below the surface. • Intrusive and extrusive • Examples • Granite • Obsidian • Rhyolite Khaki Strebel 2009
