  1. Do Now • With a partner next to you please read the handout provided and answer the following questions: • What do you think excavate means? • What are the steps archaeologists use to excavate a site? • What tools do archaeologists use to uncover their findings?

  2. Do Now • On the back of the handout from yesterday on Brain Pop September 11th please read the directions & write a brief letter to someone you consider to be a hero or admire.

  3. In groups of 3 pretend that we are archaeologists 1000 years in future who discover coins from the year 2011.

  4. Directions • Participants needed: an observer, recorder, & presenter. • By examining the coins consider on the outcome archaeologists might draw about the civilization that produced the coins. • After you have drawn your conclusions, have a representative from each group present them to the class. • The varying interpretations should effectively highlight the difficulties met by archaeologists and others who study the past.

  5. Questions: (Pretend you are an archaeologist) • Describe the coin. Does this former civilization have a religion? • Can you tell anything about their life from the coin? • How do you think the coin was made? • Do the coins reveal anything about their art or architecture? • Can you guess the individual pictured (if any) on the coin? • Do you think the job of an archaeologist is difficult? Why?

  6. Review • What is the difference between a historian & an archaeologist? • What are the clues that archaeologists and historians use to gather and learn about history’s past?

  7. Homework • Pg. 6 Key terms & Page 11 #1-3
