Affluent (adj): rich, wealth • Hammond’s Ferry in North Augusta is a very affluent neighborhood. • Allay (v): To sooth, ease • The teacher allayed her student’s fears that they might have a pop quiz. • Alleviate (v): to relieve, make more bearable • This drug will alleviate the symptoms of the terrible disease, but only for a while. • Allocate (v): to distribute, set aside • Land has been allocated for the new Bass Pro store that will be built soon in Columbia County. • Altercation (n): a dispute, fight • The altercation began when Edward accused Jacob of trying to steal Bella’s affections.

  3. 6. Ambiguous (adj): uncertain, not easily interpreted • Some people think Caesar married Cleopatra for her power, others believe he was charmed by her beauty. 7. Anecdote (n): a short, humorous account • After dinner, Sam told an anecdote about how he got his nose stuck in the toaster. 8. Anomaly (n): something that does not fit into the normal order • The million inches of rain we had this summer was a total weather anomaly! 9. Appalling (adj): inspiring shock, horror, disgust • The judge found the thief's lack of remorse appalling. 10. Arbitrary (adj): based on factors that appear random • George’s decision to choose one college over another seems arbitrary and not based on any sort of facts.
