  2. Smallpox • Smallpox is a contagious disease caused by the variola virus. • Has existed since 1500 B.C. • There host is a human cell

  3. Symptoms • Backache • Delirium • Diarrhea • Excessive bleeding • Fatigue • High fever • Raised pink rash - turns into sores that become crusty on day 8 or 9

  5. Disease spread • Breathing it in through the air • Saliva that comes from the coughing of infected patients. • Touching smallpox scabs or infected clothing can also spread the disease.

  6. Treatment • Smallpox vaccine after 1-4 days will prevent or make it less severe • No drugs specifically treat the disease • Antibiotics for infections • Person infected isolated

  7. Current Research • UCLA-Department of Epidemiology does research • Improving treatments • Lock the virus up to stop biological warfare
