  2. What is Smallpox • Smallpox is an infectious disease unique to humans, caused by either of two virus variants, Variola major and Variola minor.

  3. How is it spread • Bodily fluids • Skin to skin contact • Soiled garments

  4. whom it affected • Largest outbreak was in Europe • Smallpox is no longer a disease in the United States • Last case in the United States was in 1949 • Last case in the world was in 1977

  5. Health Detriment's • No access to health care • No employment • Low income or no income • Bad living environments

  6. What are the symptoms • Symptoms of smallpox include : • Fatigue • High fever • Body ache • Mouth sores • Occasional vomiting • Skin rash • Excessive bleeding

  7. Exams/ Tests • Dicpanel (Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation.) • Platelet count • White blood cell count

  8. Treatment/prevention • Types of treatments : • Intravenous fluids • Medication to control fever or pain • Antibiotics to prevent secondary infections from bacteria • Good Nursing care • Types of preventions : • Vaccine • To make the vaccination it costs the government 3 dollars. • The cost for a vaccination can be 25 to 200 dollars
