  2. Rahul Gandhi To Address Students, Rallies In US • Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will be visiting the US in May for 10 days and comes following his party’s thumping victory in Karnataka. Analysts say it has increased the stature of Gandhi and he is now being seen as a party leader who is willing to work in the grassroots. • Gandhi, also is no longer a sitting MP having been disqualified from parliament, creating protests and the ruling party in India being accused of exhibiting non-democratic principles.

Bipartisan Legislation To Protect ‘Aged-Out’ Dreamers Reintroduced • A group of US lawmakers, including Indian American Congressmen Raja Krishnamoorthi and Ami Bera, have reintroduced a bipartisan legislation to protect children of long-term visa holders from aging out when they turn 21, forcing them to self-deport. • Congresswoman Deborah Ross and Senator Alex Padilla, who was accompanied by more than 40 such children — also called Documented Dreamers — announced the reintroduction of America’s Children Act at a press conference on Capitol Hill on May 17.

Congress Invites 19 Like-Minded Parties For Karnataka Swearing-In, Leaves Out 10 Others • The Congress had sent out invites for its Karnataka government’s swearing-in ceremony to 19 like-minded parties, while it has left out 10 parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) among others. • The Congress had triumphed in Karnataka by winning 135 out of 224 seats in the southern state while the ruling BJP was reduced to 66 seats. • According to party sources, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge sent invitations to 19 parties to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the party’s government in Bengaluru on May 20.

Neil Makhija Wins Democratic Nom For County Office • Indian American attorney and educator Neil Makhija has won the Democratic nomination for Montgomery County Commissioner. • Makhija had thrown his hat in the ring for the primary election on May 16 for Commissioner of Montgomery County, which has one of the largest Asian-American populations in Pennsylvania. • “It’s official! Our underdog campaign succeeded, and I have officially won the Democratic nomination for Montgomery County Commissioner. None of this would have happened without my incredible team + supporters, and for that, I am immeasurably grateful. Together, we made history,” he tweeted.
