The small print • After the meeting the project signups will be opened, and you will be able to choose your preferred projects by using the signup tool at https://www2.ph.ed.ac.uk/signuptool/signup/U01425_6/projecthttps://www2.ph.ed.ac.uk/signuptool/signup/U01430_6/projector https://www.ph.ed.ac.uk/signuptool • You can indicate projects which you would really like to do, projects which are OK but not your first choice, and projects which you want nothing to do with. • First preference for places on Astrophysics projects will be given to Astrophysics students. • The deadline for signing up will be 5 pm on Friday 27th November – the allocations will then be made, giving as many people as possible one of their first choice projects. • Anyone signing up between Friday night and Monday morning will be allocated to one of their preferred projects if space is still available, but this can't be guaranteed. • Anyone not signed up by about 10 am on Monday 30th November is liable to be allocated to a project of our choice • If you will have real problems accessing the signup tool during this time, please let us know in advance. Learning Outcomes • At the end of this project you should be able to: • Research material on a given topic outwith the scope of your standard course work using library and on-line facilities and other resource materials • Work as a team to gather and combine material from a wide range of sources • Exercise critical assessment of the project topic and arriving at a well-defended conclusion • Hold formal team meetings and maintain minutes of such meetings • Prepare your researched material as a report written at a level readily understood by your peers • Present this same material in the form of a short oral presentation, as if at a conference, and respond to questions relating to this material A D Kennedy

  8. Why work in Teams? A group of people all working in the same direction is very efficient Allows you to break up a task and all work in parallel, with each person adding their part.

The Team • No ideal team member, a good team contains a mix of people • Chairman to direct and manage team’s efforts (not to do all the work or have all the ideas) • Evaluator who can make hard-headed and sometimes unpopular judgements • Workers to do the actual work • Too many “genius” types often distract the team with way-out ideas A D Kennedy
