  2. Closed syllable rule • When a word has one vowel and is closed in by at least one consonant at the end of the word it makes the short vowel sound. cap Ed spring moss grub a e i o u

  3. There are 5 exceptions to the closed syllable rule • ild wild • ind bind “i” Whenever these letters are in a closed syllable word the vowel says it’s name!! “i”

  4. “O” • old cold Whenever these letters are in a closed syllable word the vowel says it’s name!! ost post “O”

  5. “O” • olt bolt Whenever these letters are in a closed syllable word the vowel says it’s name!!

  6. v – e rule • Whenever there is a vowel, then a consonant, then an e at the end of a syllable, the e is silent and the vowel says it’s name. (the long sound) • plate globe prize

  7. There are also exceptions to the v-e (vowel consonant e) rule • give The vowel does not say it’s name even though it is a v-c-e syllable .

  8. There are some letters that HATE to be at the end of the word! Guess what letter volunteers to be at the ‘end of the line’?
