THEAExam: Assists the university in placing you in certain college courses. Please Note: You may not begin college, until you have submitted your THEA scores to a university unless exempt.

  9. 5. Personal Statement Who are You & Where do you come from? What are your immediate & long-term goals in life? What is important in your life? Activities / Family / A specific cause… What obstacles / difficulties have shaped who you are & why you want / need to pursue your education? What does going to college mean to you and your family?

College Essays – No Guts No Glory Topic A Question:  Write an essay in which you tell us about someone who has made an impact in your life and explain how and why this person is important to you. Topic B Question:  Choose an issue of importance to you - the issue could be personal, school related, local, political, or international in scope - and write an essay in which you explain the significance of that issue to yourself, your family, your community, or your generation. Topic C Question:  There may be personal information that you want considered as part of your admissions application.  Write an essay describing that information.  You might include exceptional hardships, challenges, or opportunities that have shaped or impacted your abilities or academic credentaials, personal responsibilities, exceptional achievements or talents, educational goals, or ways in which you might contribute to an institution committed to creating a diverse learning environment.

  12. #8: University Merit-Based Scholarships • Scholarship Criteria: • Each university awards for outstanding achievement known as merit-based scholarships. • Example: • Intellectual ability: High GPA / % within high school class and Ranking in H.S. class • Artistic ability: May qualify for Music, Art, Theatre scholarships, etc.. • Athletic ability: May qualify for a football, basketball, soccer, swimming, baseball scholarships, etc…

Need-Based Scholarships • Scholarship Criteria: • May be offered by your university of choice, a business, an organization, or a private scholarship organizations. • It may take academics into account, but the primary criterion for qualification is demonstrating financial need. • Please explain if your financial situation changed due to: • If a parent was laid-off from work • If a parent(s) are deceased • If you or a family member has been continuously ill causing hardship, etc…. • A need based scholarship may pay partial or full tuition, housing and sometimes book expenses.

Additional Scholarship Information #1: State and National Scholarships- • Available NOW during your Fall Semester (Ex: Dell, Gates-Millenium, Coca-Cola) • Amounts range from $1,000 to $25,000 #2: University Scholarships - AVAILABLE NOW ASAP (available on applytexas.org OR commonapp.org) • Amounts range from $500 to $250,000 #3: Local Scholarships- (Ex: VAMOS, STARS) Available Spring Semester • Amounts range from $100 to $2,500 Most large-scale scholarships are awarded by Universities!

  16. Admissions Procedures You must make sure to submitall universityrequirements before being considered for college admission prior to the deadline! Just remember - ThinkF. A. S. T.!!!! • #1: Fees (If applicable) • #2: Application • #3: Scores (ACT, SAT, THEA) • #4: Transcript (Obtained from your RVHS registrar)

  17. Admission Procedures You have not been considered for admission until you have… Step#1: Paid your Application “F”- Fees!!! I). Application Fee Waiver: Make sure to mail it in!!!!! Reminder: 1 ACT/SAT Test Waiver Used = 4Free App. fees waived II). Special Invitation via mail / E-mail: Some private or Out-of-State Universities send you a promo code to waive fees. Ex: Mary-Hardin Baylor, Baylor U, St. John’s III). Payment: Some colleges may require payment.

  18. Admission Procedures Step # 2: “A” - Applied!!!!!!! I). Applytexas.org – Used by majority of Texas Public Colleges / Universities II). Commonapp.org – Used by majority of Private or Out Of State Universities Once you have submitted your 1st application, it is much easier to submit the next app.!!! Simply “copy an existing application!”

  19. Admission Procedures Step # 3: “S” – Scores: SAT / ACT I). When you initially registered to ACT or SAT, you were provided with the option to send 4 universities your scores for Free! II). Additional score reports are $11 per report and you may logon to your ACT/SAT account and pay by credit card to do so.

  20. Admission Procedures Step # 4: “T” – TRANSCRIPT I). Official High School isneeded for everyone applying & OfficialCollege Transcript isalsoneeded if you have taken any Dual / Concurrent Enrollment courses. Note: A TRANSCRIPT is an inventory of the courses you have taken & grades earned for each course. Includes: (a) GPA (b) Class Rank (c) Registrar’s Signature (d) Official School Seal Stop by your F.A.O. to obtain a Transcript Request Form!!!

  21. Plan on Playing College Sports? Make sure you are registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse Organization! • NCAA Registration Process • Web application at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net • Membership fee – can be waved for free with high school counselor permission • Submit two high school transcripts • One transcript as soon as web form is complete • Second transcript at final graduation

  22. Admission Procedures Don’t forget, YOU have not been considered for admission until you have all items submitted to the university!!! BE MINDFUL OF DEADLINES – NO EXCEPTIONS!!! YOUR DUE DATE FOR ALL MATERIALS IS NOVEMBER 1st!!!!!

Ex: Meningitis vaccine records, Resumes, Residency Affidavit, Housing applications, Letters of Recommendations……… #2: What are the admission requirements to enter your university in particular? #3: If we recently took the ACT / SAT exam, should we wait on applying? #4: How long will it take to receive a response back as to whether I have been admitted? #5: What can we be doing as we await our Admissions response? #6: Why is it important to apply to several universities?

  29. THEA and Remedial Courses Some colleges/universities do not accept the TAKS exemptions and may request higher scores on THEA to place you out of remedial classes

Free online government application can be used for universities and colleges nation wide Used to apply for Grants, Work Study and Loans Seniors 2013 will complete FAFSA in the Spring 2013 (Jan-Feb)

  40. Important financial aid tips to remember: • File your income tax as soon as possible! You can apply as soon after January 1st. • Early filing allows you to use the IRS Data Retrieval System (2 week processing time). • Make sure all information provided on the FAFSA is current and accurate; mistakes can cause major delays in processing • Priority Deadline is February 10th(March 1st): all verification documents must be submitted by this date!
