  4. Region 8- facts • Members 69.049 (Jan 2009) • Sections56 • basically compatible with countries, exceptions: Russia and Saudi Arabia • different history, traditions, size • big mosaic of cultures and technical backgrounds • Chapters448(April 2009) • Student Branches 305(April 2009)

  5. Congratulations to 63 newly elevatedFellows • The most telling evidence behind our Region’s achievements and its high status in the Institute • I would like to strongly encourage our younger members to follow those prominent examples

  7. 2009 - a noteworthy year • IEEE 125th Anniversarymany celebrations in Region 8 • 50th Anniversary of our Sections(approved May 13, 1959) - Benelux Section - Italy Section

My main aims On the Region level • building friendly atmosphere within the Region • increasing the number of young engineers from the industry • encouraging Chapters and Student Branches to enhance their activity • intensification of technical activities by the Region(over 40% of members do not belong to any Society) • continuation of all our best practices On the IEEE Board level • intensify the process of transnationalizing, enhacing IEEE globalization • increase the number of Region 8 representatives  in the compositions of various Committees

General Assumptions for Financial Policy • due to global economic crisis and decrease in IEEE financial reserves, introduction of new strategy of economizing is required • strongerfinancial support on concrete projects rather than meetings for meetings sake • introducing guidelines to optimize travel expenditures • face-to-face SubCommittee meetings to be held max. twice/year, joint with R8 Commmittee meeting regular teleconferences are strongly recommended

Region 10 Meeting Hanoi, 28th Feb-1st March 2009 • At Region’s 10 invitation R8 Director participated and gave presentation on the Best Practices in Region 8 • Regions 8 and 10 are the largest in the IEEE with about 38% of the total membership; they share many similar problems, activities and initiatives. Some common problems and future plans were discussed • R10 Director is invited to attend the R8 Fall Committee Meeting in Lisbon

  16. IEEE Gulf Countries Council (GCC) ConferenceKuwait, 17-19th March 2009 • main annual conference in the Middle East (previously all were held in Bahrain) • about 400 attendees • its prestige was also confirmed by the participation of the Kuwait Prime Minister and the country’s government • particularly active were the WIE Affinity Groups Congratulations to the Organisers and Gulf Countries Sections

Other events in 2009 • about300 local technical conferences and workshops organized or supported by Sections and Chapters • several leading Societies conferences organized with the help of local Chapters and Sections • 4 Chapter Chairs meetings (jointly organized with leading Societies in R8) • many local celebrations of the IEEE 125th Anniversary
