Aims of this session • Share some ideas about helpful and unhelpful preparation • Discuss our different approaches to exams / stress • what helps? • Share ideas on reaching the end of Y11 knowing we have achieved our best effort • Above all: • Believe that you can make a difference, it’s never too late to prepare • Try not to obsess about stress / exams, take your time and stay healthy

  9. things that won’t help much • Ignoring the revision and hoping it will go away • Not having down time and social life • Not having a plan to cover what you think you need to do - can lead to panic • Spending too long on how-to-revise guides then not doing it • Poor sleep e.g. Staying up all night to revise – your brain works on learning when you are asleep • Poor diet and exercise habits – your brain needs food • Staying off school – your teachers can help, ask them or talk about your activities to check you are on track • Not knowing your exam timetable and where you need to be

  11. what are some of the helpful things teachers have talked to you about exams, homework and preparation? “This isn’t the end of the world”  “Seeing this from a student’s perspective I’d suggest…”  “Do the amount of work you think you can do, and that’s good enough”  “You’re on the road to getting your target grade”  “I know your core subjects have to take priority…” Source: Y11 students (Miller and Morris, 2018)

What can parents do? • Be encouraging and recognise all efforts in preparing • Allow quiet time and space for study, and encourage down-time • Remind students that your best is good enough, and sometimes best is having a break to re-charge • Encourage fresh air breaks, e.g. 15 minute walk around the block – go together! • Cook their favourite meals during exam season • Don’t be a nag – remember what you did when that happened to you! • Remember that stumbling at exam time is not the end of the world, we learn by all our experiences (good and bad)

  14. Ideas for relaxation • A walk • Some music • A hot drink, glass of water • Yoga stretches / swim / run / mindfulness / other activity you enjoy • Baking • Read something not related to exams • Power nap (max 30 minutes) …and what else?
