Intro to the A+ Core • Motherboard - also called system board • CPU- calculations take place, needs cooled • RAM-DIMMS replacing SIMMS • Expansion slots- where devices attach • Power Supply- converts 115 volt to 3,5,12 volt • Floppy Drive-34 pin connector, twist in cable • Hard Drive- can be SCSI or IDE

Six Most Common Types of Connectors for PC’s • DB- most common, male and female • DIN-always female, 2 sizes- DIN and mini-DIN • Centronics-contacts and no pins, SCSI • RJ- 2 types- RJ 11 for modems, RJ 45 for networks • BNC-also called coax connectors, fading in use • AUDIO- one type- mini audio

  4. Other PC Devices and their Connections • SOUND CARDS-convert digital to sound, and sound to digital • VIDEO CARD- 15 pin female DB connector. Easy to identify, always 3 rows of 5 pins • NIC-Network Interface Card. Usually 2 types of connectors: RJ-45 and BNC

  5. Other PC Devices and their Connectors • KEYBOARD-PS/2-style mini-DIN • MOUSE- used to be connected via a SERIAL port. • Serial ports are either 25 or 9 pin male DB. Serial ports send streams of data one bit at a time • Now the mouse in connected with a mini DIN connector through a PS/2 mouse port which is a special serial port

Use 2 RJ-11 connectors • PRINTERS- Use parallel ports, which are 25 pin female DB connectors. • JOYSTICK- 15 pin female DB

Jumpers and DIP switches • The Primary tools of Hardware setup. • DIP SWITCHES- can be on or off, which is which? • JUMPERS- tiny pins, grouped together in two’s or three’s. “Shunts are put on them to create a circuit. • No shunt= Open or Off • With shunt= Shorted, Closed or On • Parked shunt=Not being used
