Nationalism and Colonial Empires • Nationalism sparked independence movements in Europe and the unification of Italy and Germany. • Nationalism is the devotion and loyalty to one’s country. • Having a common language, religion, history, or culture typically lead to a sense of nationalism. • Nationalist uprisings result from people wanting to be free of foreignrule. • Compare present day Europe to of Italian and German unification on page 649 of the text.

Nationalism and Colonial Empires • Colonial empires grew in the late 1800s as industrialism led to a new wave of imperialism. • Imperialism is the control of a region or country by another country. • Three main factors caused imperialism to increase: • Need for raw materials • Availability of markets for manufactured goods • Nationalism

Nationalism and Colonial Empires • Colonial empires grew in the late 1800s as industrialism led to a new wave of imperialism. • Africa was the primary target to expand imperialism in the 1800s. • As a result of imperialism, cultures in many countries of Africa were disrupted through forced labor and intrusion of different languages, religions, and beliefs. • Examine how the US became an imperial power.

As you read this chapter, you will create a journal page (or pages) based on events and people from the time period of the French and Industrial Revolutions. You will write your journal as if you were a citizen of Europe during this interesting time. • Page 652 – Complete # 4 – Develop a more complete picture of your character.

Focus on Writing • Make sure you have the following in your entry: • Appropriate date • Introduction sentences to give your reader a sense of who you are and what is going on right now in your life. • Journal entry focused on what happened, how you were involved, and what other people were part of this experience. • Be sure to combine facts with feelings.
