BACKGROUND • The PSEA was launched in June 2002, as an initiative to demonstrate the Gauteng Provincial Government’s resolve to actively implement the Batho Pele principles, value positive service delivery initiatives and recognize teams of public servants which went the extra mile in ensuring that GPG effectively and efficiently delivers on its priorities in improving the lives of the people of Gauteng

BACKGROUND cont. • OBJECTIVES • Showcase and celebrate positive work done by GPG departments • Recognise and encourage service excellence by GPG project teams • Serve as a platform for networking and sharing best practices • Foster commitment to and implementation of the Batho Pele principles • Inculcate a sense of belonging, caring and serving • Facilitate a culture of continuous improvement, innovation and excellence. • Reward Departments who have excelled in achieving the five year mandate.

  4. AWARD CATEGORIES: 2008 Front-line units e.g schools, health districts, welfare offices Face of Govt Category Support units e.g HR, Finance, GSSC, strategy Back-Office Support Departments that have excelled in Implementation of the 2004-2009 GPG Five-Year Strategic programme Departmental Award

AWARDS LESSONS LEARNED • Successes • Increased awareness/interest & increased quality & quantity of submissions • Support of SMS • Challenges • Entries unevenly spread across departments • Links to Departmental Awards needs to be fostered • Best Practice needs to be shared more widely (provincially & nationally) • Inadequate advocacy/communication and media campaign around project

  8. WAY FORWARD • Greater advocacy to increase number of nominations/submissions in the process • Facilitate links to national and departmental Awards • A long-term strategy for the implementation of the PSEA to be formulated in consultation with key stakeholders
