  1. Ryan Koubek & Mike Maloy Team 3 September 14, 2006 Aircraft Design Class Aircraft Galley, Lavatory, and Water Systems

  2. Lavatory, Galley, and Water System • Important to include in preliminary design. • Large investment in weight • Large investment in volume

  3. Typical Layouts

  4. Galley • All food prep is done on the ground • Equipment • Coolers • Warmers • Coffee Makers • 90 – 100 KVA allocated

  7. Water supply • .3 gallons per person • Pressurized by pneumatic system • Water quality regulated by EPA • Tanks have to be flushed and disinfected

  12. Lavatories • Rule of Thumb: 1 lavatory per 30 passengers • They use very little water (about 0.5 gallons per flush)

  13. Lavatory • They can use much smaller diameter sewer pipes • They can flush in any direction, including upward. Since a vacuum system does not use gravity to move the water, there is nothing to stop the sewer pipe from going straight up • They can be put anywhere in the aircraft

  14. Waste System • Self contained • Waste tanks and flushing units mix the waste with chemicals • Vacuum flush from in flight pressure differential (No gravity plumbing) • Must be serviced after every flight. • Drain locations need to be positioned carefully

  18. Food for Thought • Doesn't apply for UAVs or HPA • Military Transports?
