  2. French and Indian War • When: 1754-1763 • Who: England vs France • Why: Conflict in Europe (7 yrs war) and settlement disputes in North America • Impact: -England gained land from France in North America -Increased rules on American colonists -gained debt from war and started taxing

  3. American Revolution • When: 1775-1783 • Who: England vs Colonies • Why: To gain independence -Colonists angry over taxing from England without representation in Parliament -Stamp Act, Townshend Act, Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party…… • Impact: US gained independence & land from Atlantic to Mississippi River

  4. War of 1812 • When: 1812 - 1814 • Who: England vs America • Why: US angry over British arrogance (giving weapons to natives and taking US ships) • Impacts: -ended in a truce (treaty of Ghent) -Confirmed US independence -Kept frontier open -Monroe Doctrine -Era of Good Feelings

  5. Mexican American War • When: 1846 - 1848 • Who: Mexico and United States • Why: Border Dispute “American blood shed on American soil” -US annexed Texas which recently gained independence from Mexico • Impact: -Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo -US gained California, New Mexico, Arizona,Nevada……

  6. Civil War • When: 1861-1865 • Who: Confederates vs Union • Why: US tried to preserve the country when Southern states seceded -Issues: states rights and slavery • Impact: -End of Slavery (13, 14, 15 amendments) -Southern devastation - Reconstruction

  7. Spanish American War • When: 1898 (15 weeks) • Who: Spain vs US • Why: US interests in Cuba & Yellow Journalism -USS Maine Exploded • Impact: Treaty of Paris – US gained Guam, Puerto Rico, Philippines and 2 bases in Cuba

World War I • When: 1914-1918 (US enters in 1917) • Who: Central Powers vs Allies • Why: Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, Nationalism -Assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand • Impact: -Treaty of Versailles – -League of Nations – US did not join -Germany: pay reparations, war guilt, lost territory -Russia  Soviet Union

Countries hurting from the Depression • Impacts: -United Nations -Nuremberg Trials -Countries formed like Israel -Free Elections -Start of the Cold War

  10. Cold War • When: 1945- 1989 • Who: USSR vs USA • Why: -US distrust of communists -Competition for superpowers –USSR spreading communism & US containment • Impact: -US emerges as only super power -Fall of the USSR -Space Race -Build up of Nuclear weapons

  11. Korean “Conflict” • When: 1950-1953 • Who: North Korea (USSR) vs South Korea (USA) • Why: North attacked South Korea -US fear of domino theory – wanted to contain • Impact: -Armistice – 38th Parallel redrawn

Vietnam War • When: 1955-1975 • Who: North Vietnam (USSR) vs South Vietnam (USA) • Why: Vietnam divided at Geneva Accords -North (communist) attacked South -US fear of domino theory – wanted to contain • Impact: -US withdrew because of causalities and public opinion -War Powers Act -Vietnam united under Communist rule

  13. Gulf War • When: 1991 • Who: United Nations vs Iraq • Why: Iraq invaded Kuwait • Impact: -UN regulation of Iraq -Kuwait liberated

  14. War on Terror • When: 2001 - present • Who: US vs Afghanistan, Iraq … • Why: -Terrorist Attacks on US (9/11) -Dismantle governments in support of terrorism • Impacts: -Bush Doctrine – preemptive strike policy -Department of Homeland Security created -Patriot Act
