  2. North Korea • North Korea is officially an atheist state and practicing a religion is considered a challenge to leadership. • While only 65% of the population is atheist, the remaining practicing Korean Shamanism, Confucianism, Cheondoism, and Buddhism

  3. N.K. Religious Freedom • There are religious groups set up by the government to give the illusion of religious freedom • The North Korean regime continues to repress activities of unauthorized religious groups

  4. Korean Shamanism • Also known as Muism • In this religion, the Shaman connect a spirit or god to other spirits and human beings • Based on indigenous religions and ancient folk beliefs • Over time it has infused with Buddhism

  5. South Korea • 43% of South Koreans do not practice a religion with the other 57% practicing either Christianity or Buddhism (according to the 2010 survey in the CIA World Factbook) • There is total religions freedom there with no official religion

  6. Buddhism • Buddhism is more a way of living then a religion and is considered nontheistic • Based off the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama and the Four Noble Truths • Buddhists attempt to reach salvation
