  1. Aim: How did Absolute Monarchs in Spain consolidate power? Do Now: Who controls our society? What would happen if that control was taken away? Then, who/what would take its place?

  3. Before Absolutism Who controlled society during Middle Ages? Church Who is Martin Luther and what significant role did he play in history? He wrote the 95 Thesis, his point was to show how corrupt the Catholic Church was. How did people know about the 95 thesis? (Guttenberg- printing press) (Ex. sale of indulgences and last rights)

  4. What was the result of Martin Luther and the 95 thesis? Christianity is divided in to: Roman Catholics & Protestants • Many people leave the catholic church and become Protestants, Catholic church does not have as much power • Someone has to control society who will it be? Absolute Rulers

  5. Outline of Spain in 1500’s • Gained a lot of its wealth from exploring the Americas • First and most powerful in Europe at this time • The abundance of gold and silver would eventually contribute to an economic decline

  6. Before the 1500’s… • Under Isabella and Ferdinand, Spain expelled Muslim rulers and enforced religious unity • Financed Columbus’s voyage in 1492 to the Americas

  7. Charles V • Empire grew between 1519-1556 controlled two empires because he was the heir to Hapsburgs (Austrian rulers) • Fought to suppress the Protestant Reformation • Ottoman Empire invaded and conquered most of Hungry

  8. Dividing an Empire • The empire was to vast for one person to control • Charles gave up his empire in 1556 • He gave the Hapsburg lands in central Europe to his brother Ferdinand • He also gave Spain, the Netherlands, southern Italy and a huge overseas empire to his son Phillip

  9. King Philip II 1556-1598 • Expand Spanish influence • Involved in running his government • Absolute Monarch- a ruler with complete authority over the government and lives of the people • Divine Right- belief that his authority came directly from god • Defended the Catholic Reformation

The Wars of King Philip II • Revolt in the Netherlands • Protestants resist Philips efforts to crush their faith • Both Catholics and Protestants opposed high taxation Spanish autocratic rule, which threatened their way of local self-government • 1560’s riots start and in 1581 the northern colonies declared their independence • This area became known as the Dutch Netherlands (not official until 1648)

Spanish Armada • Philip saw England’s Queen Elizabeth I as the biggest enemy when dealing with Protestant uprising • England encourages the sea dog’s (English captains) to take Spanish treasure. • Result: Spain Prepares a huge armada (fleet) to carry a Spanish invasion force to England 130 ships and 20,000 men • Bad weather caused the fleet to take many losses
